Dee's Alaska Adventure
Rode my bicycle 35 miles today. Rolling hills that gave me plenty of exercise but not so steep that I had to get off and push my bike but I definitely use all the gears on the bike top to bottom. Little rain but not bad. No headwind which is always a major hallelujah for me. My shin soreness is much better today. I was careful to keep my left foot stationary, that is not to flex at all at the ankle so as not to pull on those muscles. Between that, the ibuprofen, and the ice I think it is going to be fine. I am going to run tomorrow and hopefully get at least 15 miles in. We are in a very scenic part of the trip, all of the trip to Fairbanks is incredibly beautiful, but this section today was awesome. Snow covered mountains all along the road on both sides and the road goes along the Skeena River which is amazing as well. I saw lots of Moose and bear tracks along the side of the road, but didn't see any animals. I have to be kind of careful because I get to looking around for wildlife and could ride off the side of the road. The shoulder is not very wide and in most places I would take a pretty good ride down to the river. I would probably end up with way more aches than I presently have. We stopped at this campground in Hazeltown and the old lady showing me the camp sites said I should rent one of her motel rooms in order to take better care of my old Mom. I told her I rented one last night and didn't want to spoil her besides we were on bit of a budget in our travels to Fairbanks. She said for your Mother's sake I will give you a good deal, 50 dollars for the night for the three of you and then she showed me the room. It had two beds in two separate bedrooms. I wouldn't have to sleep in the same tent or room with my mother :-) ! I said I will take it. When I told Patty that we were going to stay in a nice motel room with a kitchen she was surprised. I told her that I was just thinking of my old decrepit mother. When we got into the room and she saw the arrangements, her response was, "Yeh, you were thinking of your mother all right, but then she smiled so I could see she approved. When my mom saw the room and the arrangement she kicked me in the butt! Don't tell Patty that I wrote this or she will be mad at me!! I solved a problem today. My right "sit bone" has been getting really sore as I ride, but the left side has been fine. I thought today, I must have a crooked butt or something for one side to hurt so bad and the other side to be fine. Then I noticed that as got on my bicycle after a break from the left side that I would drag across the seat puckering up my padded shorts a bit on the right side. After that astute observation after I got on and was peddling I would reach down and give the bottom of my shorts on the right side a good yank, and what do you know, a much more comfortable ride. I wish I could solve all my problems that easily. I am sitting here in this comfortable room reading and writing and Patty and Mom are going to go on a tour of Hazeltown. The old lady who runs this place gave them a brochure and it does look like an interesting town with lots of history of gold rushes and trapping and early settlers. We will be turning North on the Cassius highway tomorrow and according to the friendly owner of this place we will see lots of wildlife and very pretty scenery. I will be sleeping with the seat back recovering from my 15 miles running. Hope your lives are all going as well as mine is :-) talk to you tomorrow. Love ya.
